Given the changes in the international environment for energy, it is important for Asian countries to push forward energy transition that are tailored to each country’s different circumstances so that Asian nations simultaneously secure the stable energy supply, sustainable economic growth, and countermeasures against climate change. The government of Japan (GOJ) has been promoting efforts to realize energy transition in Asia through public-private partnerships, and will further accelerate these efforts in the further. Against this backdrop, Prime Minister Kishida announced the “Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC)” initiative in January 2022 with the aim of sharing a common philosophy of decarbonization in Asian nations and cooperating to push forward energy transition. On March 4 of this year, METI hosted the AZEC Ministerial Meeting, where the joint statement containing three common understanding was agreed upon, including the following: 1) to balance “decarbonization” with “energy security”; 2) to promote “decarbonization” while achieving “economic growth”; and 3) the path toward carbon neutrality should be “diverse and realistic” according to the actual conditions of each country. And the “AZEC” was launched as a framework.

In this workshop, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Bangkok office and Bangkok Research Center (BRC), and Ministry of Energy Thailand (MoEN) would like to introduce the “AZEC” concept and public and private sector activities for achieving carbon neutrality in Asia.
